Kicking goals on and off the field

05 · 9 · 22

On Sunday August 22nd, the Newport Power JFC Under 12’s won their 2022 Grand Final match! To say we are proud of the girls is an understatement. The team played a terrific season and everyone involved worked so hard to bring home the Silverware.

The most inspiring aspect of the team’s journey was to watch the girls be coached by an all-female leadership group. The girls will take this invaluable experience with them as they grow older and begin to experience the world as young women. Their coaches haven’t just led them to a premiership; they’ve armed them with the knowledge that girls can do anything, on and off the field.

Gender equality in community sport has made tremendous progress over the last few years. We’re seeing more girls sign up to play footy than ever before, thanks in part to the launch of the AFLW in 2017.

According to the AFL’s 2022 Women and Girl’s Action Plan, nearly 600,000 women and girls participate in the game and there are more than 2,500 community football teams around the country, compared to around 600 in 2015.

Despite this amazing result, AFL is still a male-dominated sport. The AFL’s Action Plan is contributing $5 million over the next three years to help attract, retain and encourage women and girls across every aspect of community football from NAB AFL Auskick, schools, community club participation, leadership, coaching and umpiring.

I’m so happy that the AFL is committed to gender equality and contributing more resources to encourage more women to get involved with their local teams. I want every girl to have the experience the Newport Power players had with their coaches Amie and Sue-Anne.

This is important to me as a family lawyer and female business owner, and especially as a mother.

A big part of my job as Principal of our firm is to empower our clients to believe in their own worth. Every client deserves to reach their full potential at work and at home. Whether it’s in sport, politics, business, in the media, or law – our female leaders are paving the way forward for a better future for all women.

Keep kicking goals, girls!
